Jez, what a brilliant and true post.

I remember my own fundamentalist phase. Behind my stern admonitions - that people should turn to Jesus to avoid dire consequences - lay the constant fear that if I did not tell them this thing, I would suffer the same fate!

I think all fundies are like this. They don't *want* to be awful; they feel that they have to be.

I'd also spent hours - sometimes several at a stretch - face down in prayer. Not a reflective kind of prayer, though; more of an obsessive-compulsive thing. (Did I say it exactly right, did I cover everything? If not, start again. The stakes are so high!)

All of which sheds some interesting light on the extreme varieties of religiousness. When viewed from outside, they look like unassailable holiness. On the inside, though, it's fear and obsession - you are terrified of acting any other way.

We should pray for our fundamentalist brothers and sisters, that they should know the truth and be set free by it!
